Earth by Night:
Contributed by Rob E. Hughes from Idaho, USA:
Check the link below...This is really a sight to
behold! The image is a panoramic view of the world from the new space
station. It is
a night photo with the lights clearly indicating the populated areas.
You can scroll East-West and North-South. Note that Canada's
population is almost exclusively along the U.S. border. Moving east to
Europe, there is a high population concentration along the
Mediterranean Coast. It's easy to spot London, Paris, Stockholm and
Vienna. Check out the development of Israel compared to the
rest of the Arab countries. Note the Nile River and the rest of the
"Dark Continent". After the Nile, the lights don't come on
again until Johannesburg. Look at the Australian Outback and the
Trans-Siberian Rail Route. Moving east, the most striking observation
is the difference between North and South Korea. Note the
density of Japan. It is an absolutely awesome picture of the Earth,

Synopsis
This text explores how the damaged brain can be repaired and
reconstructed. The key to some of neuroscience's most exciting
discoveries to date is the theory that is rapidly gaining
adherents in the scientific community - the theory of
neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity stresses that cells throughout
the brain can not only regenerate, but can adapt their function to
assume critical roles once performed by damaged tissue. The author
explains how the brain manufactures complex chemicals that foster
growth in damaged brain cells, and how misguided ideas can
adversely affect how physicians treat patients.

This is the book that
awoke my interest in the neurosciences after suffering a stroke.
And which also made me believe that eventually there could
be a "cure" for stroke, and therefore indirectly was the
reason for establishing Slagsiden.
The
book is as exciting as a thriller in the way it brings the reader
up to date in the fields of neurological research on the brain and
the central nervous system

Andre meninger / other views:
Justifiable optimism is the theme of this carefully
thought-out, clearly written book. Stein and his colleagues survey
the growth of knowledge about the brain, its injuries and
diseases; examine current approaches to the repair of those
traumas and the rehabilitation and retraining of their sufferers;
and discuss procedures of examination and diagnosis. Emphasizing
Nobel laureate Santiago Ramon y Cajal's refusal to consider brain
regeneration as a possibility, they show how this attitude has
limited the possibilities for innovative research and treatment;
many years of poor communication between laboratory researchers
and practicing clinicians have compounded that situation. Citing
specific examples of diseases and trauma, the authors show how
vital psychosocial factors are for both the present and the future
of successful treatment. Professional and lay readers alike should
ponder this pioneering book. William Beatty

Essential for care providers who help stroke patients, 3
October, 2000
|
Reviewer:
A reader from Israel |
As a GP, I would never have ordered this book from its title, but,
by pure chance it fell into my hands. It turns out to be a model
for those who believe that the health care provider cannot help
the patient (especially a severely handicapped patient with
difficulties in communicating) unless he/she understands and
relates to him/her as a whole person.
Although the book is extremely erudite, with 370 references, it
is clearly and charmingly written and therefore a pleasure to
read. It has attractive illustrations and a good index.
By virtue of its practical guidelines, the book will be very
useful not only to physiotherapists, but also to physicians and
relatives of stroke patients.
Highly recommended.

Neural
Stem Cells for Brain Repair (Contemporary
Neuroscience)
Tanja Zigova, Evan Y. Snyder, Paul R.
Sanberg
Synopsis
"Neural Stem Cells for Brain Repair" focuses on
developments in the rapidly growing area of
manipulations/utilization of the neural stem/progenitor cells for
therapeutic purposes. The text reviews basic definitions, sources
of stem cells and methods of their expansion as well as mechanisms
involved in stem cell differentiation including molecular control
of neurogenesis, the role of cytokine signaling proteins and
epigenetic regulation of neurotransmitter phenotype. Section two
brings the latest updates in rodent studies unveiling the
possibilities to boost up/mobilize the existing stem/progenitor
cell pools in the brain using various models. The last section in
the text involves featured articles of investigation using human
neural stem cells. Also covered are findings on recent advances in
human bone marrow cell research as an additional available source
for auto- and allografting of neural precursors for therapies
ranging from gene replacement to neural reconditioning in
neurodegenerative diseases, stroke and trauma.

Robert Temple: Sirius
Mysteriet / The
Sirius Mystery
En
oppdagelsesreise i oldtidens mytologier / Researching ancient
mythology
mytologien omtaler visstnok amfibievesener flere steder,
havguden. Poseidon betyr forøvrig "Verdens hersker
(konge)"

Book Description
Convincing evidence that the Egyptian, Sumerian,
and Dogon civilizations were founded by aliens from the Sirius
star system. Many authors have speculated on the subject of
extraterrestrial contact, but never before has such detailed
evidence been presented. Drawing equally on his astounding
knowledge of ancient history, mythology, Pythagorean physics,
chaos theory, and Greek, and using measurements of the Great
Pyramid of Giza--built to align directly with the star
Sirius--Temple concludes that the alien civilization of Sirius and
our own civilization are part of the same harmonic system,
destined to function and resonate together. His findings are sure
to bring a profound reappraisal of our role in the universe.

A wonderfully accessible yet scholarly piece of work.
As an amateur Egyptologist it is easier to find a book full of
technical jargon and unexplained statements than otherwise. This
is a very readable and informative piece bringing new ideas into
the public veiw rather than to a few elite initiates in the
hierarchy of the study of Ancient Egypt. All ideas, motivations
and even personal feelings are fully documented and are not just
bland statements of fact but are interesting and compell one to
delve deeper into the mystery of Egyptian religion. One cannot but
marvel at the perseverance and determination of Bauval in the face
of dead ends (excuse the pun!) and criticism. Excellent.
P.S If you want to know what the pun was about then you will have

The
Serpent in the Sky : The High Wisdom of Ancient Egypt
John Anthony West
A Reader's Review:
"An
Interpretation of Ancient Egypt that Finally makes Sense
John Anthony West has done the world an enormous service with this
bold, brilliant, beautifully written and thoroughly engaging book.
He extends the work of Alsation philospher and mathematician, R.A,
Schwaller de Lubicz, making it not only comprehensible to the lay
reader, but the only plausible explanation for the grandeur and
magnificance of ancient Egyptian culture. West is anything but a
New Age flake, and he takes some fairly tough-minded positions on
the absurdities of modern scholarship. Yet he has the advantage
over most orthodox Egyptologists in that he can (a) write -- and
write superbly -- and (b) he has a sense of humor, which makes
even his most vitriolic attacks on those who persist in ascribing
the monuments of Egypt to a race of egomaniacal barbarians the
work of a rational giant in a world of Lilliputians. His grasp of
the entire sweep of Egyptian history is extraordinary, and his
ability to render even the most complex accounts of Pythagorean
geometry or symbolism in the hieroglyphs is something every would
be academic should take notes on. Besides all this, the book is
magnificently illustrated on every page. Without any question,
this is one of the best books I have ever read."

R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz (1887--1961) was one of
the most important philosophers, mathematicians, and Egyptologists
of this century. His elucidation of the temple at Luxor and his
presentation of the Egyptian understanding of a special quality of
innate consciousness form a bridge that links the sacred science
of the Ancients to its rediscovery in our own time

Beskrivelse/ Description:
Omar
James Ross is a maverick Egyptologist--he has his own theories,
whic put him at odds with the academic establishment. He believes
that the astonishing knowledge and abilities of the anciient
Egyptians must have come from an earlier civilisation, which he
refers to as Atlantis. When Ross receives a frightened phone call
from an old friend and colleague, he returns to Egypt to find out
what's wrong--and also to find that his friend is dead.
Immediately he's caught up in a series of terrifying
adventures--shootings, bomb attacks, beatings by the police.
Ross' mother was from a small Bedouin-type tribe,
the Hawazim, and Ross finds himself drawn back into their life:
long camel rides across the trackless wastes of the Western Desert
with almost no food or water, hiding from the authorities, and
learning, against his will, that he has a rare talent valued by
his tribe.
But why are the authorities so much against him?
Who are the mysterious group, the Eye of Ra? And can the tomb of
the despised pharaoh Akhnaton be found at the hidden oasis of
Zerzura, a place no one can find twice, and which has driven mad
those few who have found it in the past? When Ross finally
discovers the truth, it's more astonishing and more disturbing
than anything he had imagined. But then, is it the truth? Or is it
all part of the plotting and counter-plotting with which
Egyptology is riven?
The Eye of Ra is a fascinating
novel, written by someone who not only knows the way of the
desert, but also knows the machinations of Egyptology. Many of the
theories of recent speculative rewriters of ancient history
(Bauval, Hancock, etc) are drawn into the plot. Beautifully
written, with strong and memorable characters, this novel above
all leaves in the readers' mind a powerful love and respect for
the harsh but beautiful life of the desert.

Fast and fun and you'll learn some Egyptology too!
Michael Asher has produced a "page turner." Embark
chapter one to be swept along at a gallop and larded with humour
to the conclusion. This is predictable and incredible but still
enjoyably spectacular. Sammy Rashid is a Special Investigations
Detective living in Cairo. After the murder of an apogee of
scholastic intelligence who was also a US Governmental Adviser, he
is called on to co-operate with female representative, Daisy
Brooke, of the FBI. The sexual interaction is stereotypical, but
compensation comes in some memorable throwaway lines in their
dialogue. Sammy has minor psychic gifts enhanced by his childhood
in the desert which create an interweaving sub plot connected,
when he was a child, to the disappearance of his American father.
Written evocatively, the tale loops through the sinister back
streets of Cairo, sharing the seedy night life of criminals then
into the aridest areas of the Sahara desert. It steadily peels
layer upon layer from the character of Sammy Rashid. Meanwhile,
Daisy is not all she seems. Asher's writing style is such that he
has lifted the whole of Egypt from its present environs to the
United States. All the accents and the players' thoughts are
strictly Midwest. After the initial shock of a native born
Egyptian saying, "Let's grab a soda," or
"sonofabitch", acceptance of the style adds to the
humour. Where this book is outstanding is in its treatment of the
Egyptian myths, legends and mysteries which continue to beguile
historians. Even within the context of a novel, Asher's
enchantment with the subject shines through providing yet another
strand to superbly enhance the narrative. Egyptophiles will
happily wallow in his analysis of the conundrum of the Great
Pyramid, using Sammy's voice; others will decide to visit the
great Egyptian repositories like the British Museum or better
still visit the real thing.

WARNING ISSUES ABOUT SWITCHING FROM MIBEFRADIL
TO OTHER ANTIHYPERTENSIVES
Four cases where patients went into
cardiogenic shock within a few hours of
being switched from mibefradil to other calcium-channel
blockers (CCBs) will
be reported in the July 8 issue of the Journal of the
American Medical
Association. Mibefradil's market withdrawal on June 8
(see Lancet June 13, p
1791) prompted the early release of the article because
of its public-health
importance --thousands of people worldwide will be
changing from mibefradil
to other drugs in the next few weeks.
The article reports four cases of patients who were
switched from
mibefradil to
other CCBs because their blood pressure was not being
adequately
controlled by
mibefradil. The patients began taking their new drug
within a day of
stopping
mibefradil. One patient died. The other three survived
after treatment in
intensive care (JAMA 1998; 280: 157-58).
About 200 000 people in the USA alone will need to
change from mibefradil to
another CCB, so many more of these newly reported
life-threatening drug-drug
interactions could occur. Michael Mullins (Oregon Poison
Center, Portland,
OR,
USA), an author on the new report, notes that the
possibility of
interactions between mibefradil and other CCBs was not
included in the June
8 warning, which focused on mibefradil's effect on the
activity of liver
detoxifying enzymes.
In a supplementary letter issued on June 12, Roche
advises a delay of 7 days
between discontinuing mibefradil and taking most other
CCBs and
ß-blockers. A
14-day delay is recommended before switching to
felopidine or timolol.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
What lessons can be learnt from withdrawal of mibefradil
from the market?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Roche announced on June 8 its withdrawal of the calcium
antagonist,
mibefradil
(Posicor), from the market, almost exactly a year after
the drug had been
given
marketing approval in Europe and the USA. The withdrawal
was based on new
reports about serious interactions with other drugs. Is
it yet another
example of overprecipitous approval by licensing
agencies,1 whose
livelihoods in some
cases depend on fees from pharmaceutical companies?
Companies would argue
that the withdrawal shows just how risky investment in
the pharmaceutical
industry is. Where does the truth lie and what lessons
can be learnt from
this episode?
Drug research is expensive and there is no reliable way
of ensuring that the
investment required will yield the blockbuster drugs
that the major
pharmaceutical companies need to keep going. Bringing a
drug such as
mibefradil to the market costs on average several
hundred million pounds.2,3
Withdrawal of mibefradil, which was projected to account
for 1-3% of Roche's
sales in the next few years, led to a 2% drop in its
market value.4 The
chief executive of SmithKline Beecham has suggested that
his company needs
to produce three products with potential annual sales of
£250 million each
year between 1998 and 2000 and six thereafter to
maintain the 10% sales
growth that investors expect.5 Given this financial
pressure, it is not
surprising that companies market their products
vigorously.
Advertisements for mibefradil suggest that there was
little modesty in the
promotion of the drug, which was claimed to be a
first-line therapeutic
agent for hypertension and angina. Given the absence of
long-term studies
such as those that have established thiazide diuretics
and ß-blockers as
truly first-line therapy for hypertension, objective
observers would
classify mibefradil as a second-line agent that deserves
a black triangle
(to indicate limited experience) in the British National
Formulary.6 How did
the industry's advertising authority allow this claim to
pass through? With
this experience, perhaps the advertising of the newer
antihypertensive
agents, such as the angiotensin II antagonists (the
"sartans"), needs
re-examination.
Mibefradil was withdrawn from the market because
"the combination of Posicor
and
some other commonly used drugs, among them
cardiovascular agents, may
increase the frequency of side-effects of these other
medications. In
principle drug interactions can be addressed by
appropriate labelling;
however, with respect to Posicor, Roche Laboratories
believes that the
complexity of such prescribing information would make it
too difficult to
implement". The interactions were predictable from
the pharmacology of the
drug. Mibefradil inhibits the action of cytochrome P450
3A4. Therefore when
given concurrently with drugs that are metabolised by
this enzyme,
concentrations of these drugs would be expected to
increase. With drugs
possessing a narrow therapeutic window, such as
cyclosporin and tacrolimus
(panel), toxic concentrations could be reached with
normal doses. Roche's
decision suggests that drug-regulatory authorities ought
to review urgently
the licensing of current and future drugs with this
potential for
interaction.
Mibefradil is, pharmacologically, an exciting new
molecule that has opened
up
many new avenues for research. Its selective
T-channel-blocker activity led
to its classification as a new category of calcium
antagonist. This
classification perhaps led to the perception that
somehow it was above the
problems associated with older calcium antagonists.7,8
Pharmacological
plausibility plays a large part in the licensing of
drugs, as is evidenced
by the wide use of surrogate outcomes. Perhaps it is
time to be less
enamoured by pharmacological rationale and to accept
that the true value of
a drug and whether it should be a first-line agent can
be assessed only
through properly conducted randomised controlled trials
with hard outcomes.
As for patients stabilised on mibefradil, they should
not be withdrawn from
treatment abruptly, but care must be taken to ensure
that they are not
taking interacting drugs concurrently. Alternative
antihypertensives should
be prescribed as soon as possible, but at least on this
score, there is no
cause for panic.

Det vakte endel
oppmerksomhet da det for noen år siden ble oppdaget
geometriske figurer i kornåkre forskjellige steder i
verden. Spesielt i England.
Inntil man en natt oppdaget to
Trodde man. Men, nei. Forklaringen må være noe
annet enn nattevandrende, pensjonerte spøkefugler,
mener Freddy Silva, som har opprettet sin
egen Crop Circle

Introduction
Everyone knows Neil
Armstrong's famous first words on the moon. But
did you know that they say something else when
played backwards? Armstrong's words, "That's
one small step for man" reverses to say, "Man
will space walk." This is a
reflection of his logical thoughts at the time.
Man will continue to walk into space
http://www.reversespeech.com/Simple_Examples.htm |
Reverse Speech is a discovery, made by Australian
Researcher David
John Oates, of a new form of communication that has
the ability to uncover a deeper truth and meaning behind
what we are actually speaking. As we speak consciously,
the brain is generating messages arising from the
unconscious. These messages occur constantly throughout
language and can be heard very clearly at least every 10
to 15 seconds by simply playing a recording of normal
speech in reverse.
THE THEORY OF REVERSE SPEECH AND SPEECH
COMPLEMENTARITY.
( 1) Human speech has two
disctinctive yet complementary functions and modes. The
Overt mode is spoken forwards and is primarily under
conscious control. The Covert mode is spoken backward and
is not under conscious control. The
backward mode of speech occurs simultaneously with the
forward mode and is a reversal of the forward speech
sounds.
(2) These two modes of speech, forward and backward,
are dependent upon each other and form an integral
part of human communication. One mode cannot be fully
understood without the other mode. In the
dynamics of interpersonal communication, both modes of
speech combined communicate the total psyche of the
person, conscious as well as unconscious.
(3) Covert speech develops before
overt speech. Children speak backwards before
they do forwards. Then, as forward speech commences, the
two modes of speech gradually combine into one, forming an
overall bi-level communication
process.

Hadde
teknologi? Hvor avanserte var de egentlig, teknisk?
Vel, her er det noe mer å tygge på i den
sammenhengen: kanskje løftet de ganske enkelt opp stenene
på pyramidene med helikopeter? Les og døm selv:
Hoagland's
Abydos discovery
Hoagland's
Abydos discovery was verified in November 1998 by a
Fox television crew's own several hundred mile trek to the
SETI-I temple at Abydos, and actual filming of the glyphs
in place within the temple. The find is nothing less than
astonishing support for the controversial sub-text of the
March 2nd Fox Egyptian telecast: that we are not the
first. That a prior, "high-tech epoch" to
civilization somehow came before the now known Ancient
Egyptian Civilization ... which attempted to memorialize
momentos of that ancient, now forgotten period in a temple
built thousands of years after its predecessor's
mysterious disappearance.

Atlantis, har det til felles med den
nesten like mytiske Hr.
ur-sivilisasjonen forsvant i havet, angivelig ca. 12.000
år f.kr. Syndeflod-sagnet, som visstnok gjenfinnes i alle
større, sivilisasjoner og religioner, helt fra India,
Egypt, Fønikerne, Jødene og over til
Indianersivilisasjonene i Syd-Amerika antas å kunne
stamme fra dette Atlantis' endelikt. Hinduene skal
visstnok ha kalt Atlantis-kontinentet "Atala",
og føyd til endelsen "tis" eller
"tiv"=(fjell eller øy) på Dravidisk,

ATLANTIS
THE
TRUE HISTORY OF ATLANTIS
overbevisende lesing.
motsatte oppfatningen! Og har nå skrevet en bok
om sine oppdagelser:

Boken kan bestilles online her:
Den tidligere teorien
om Atlantis-sagnet, har jo hittil, ellers vært omtrent som flg.
utdrag fra Microsoft's Encarta-leksikon.:

Atlantis, in the
tradition of antiquity, a large island in the Western
Ocean (the ocean to the west of the known world), near the
Pillars of Hercules. The first recorded accounts of
Atlantis, which is said to have been engulfed by the ocean
as the result of an earthquake, appear in Timaeus and
Critias, two dialogues by Greek philosopher Plato.
According to the account in Timaeus, the
island was described to Athenian statesman Solon
by an Egyptian priest, who maintained that
Atlantis was larger than Asia Minor and Libya combined.
The priest further revealed that a flourishing
civilization had reputedly centered on Atlantis about the
10th millennium BC, and that the nation had conquered all
the Mediterranean peoples except the Athenians. In
Critias, Plato records the history of Atlantis and depicts
the nation as a utopian commonwealth. Although Plato's
descriptive material and history are probably fictional,
the possibility exists that he had access to
records that have not survived.!
The tradition that a lost island such as Atlantis once
flourished has always fascinated the popular imagination,
and the tradition continues today. In the 20th century
some oceanographers advanced the theory that Atlantis was
once a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Some associate the
legend of Atlantis with the Greek island Thíra, which,
according to geologists, experienced a massive volcanic
eruption about 1500 BC. Other theories have been based on
archaeological discoveries. Scholars have variously
identified the island with Crete, the Canary Islands, the
Scandinavian Peninsula, and the Americas.

meget tidligere tider.

Moons Around Earth? It’s Not So Loony
By Robin
Lloyd
Earth has a second moon, of
sorts, and could have many others, according to three
astronomers who did calculations to describe orbital
motions at gravitational balance points in space that
temporarily pull asteroids into bizarre orbits near our
planet.
The 3-mile-wide
(5-km) satellite, which takes 770 years to complete a
horseshoe-shaped orbit around Earth, is called Cruithne
and will remain in a suspended state around Earth for at
least 5,000 years.
Cruithne,
discovered in 1986, and then found in 1997 to have a
highly eccentric orbit, cannot be seen by the naked eye,
but scientists working at Queen Mary and Westfield College
in London were intrigued enough with its peregrinations to
come up with mathematical models to describe its path.
That led them to
theorize that the model could explain the movement of
other objects captured at the gravitational balance points
that exist between all planets and the sun.
"We found
new dynamical channels through which free asteroids become
temporarily moons of Earth and stay there from a few
thousand years to several tens of thousands of
years," said Fathi Namouni, one of the researchers,
now at Princeton University.
